Always remember to buy only what you need and can afford. Grocery stores have a strategy to make you buy as much as possible. Beat them buy preparing a list with the items you need. Then when you go to the shop, only buy the items in the list.

When you are on the grocery store carefully examine the entire shelf. Grocery stores will likely put the expensive items on eye-level and the cheaper ones very high or very low. If price is the issue take the time to search well for the lowest price.

Grocery stores follow the same tactic. They suddenly change the price of their items making them more expensive. In order to know when this happens, you could make a list of the items you buy often and start keeping track of the prices for those items. If you write down the prices you will also know, when an item is on sale, if it is really a sale.

Shop Smart and Save on Groceries

By: Judith Turner

With the rising cost of groceries it might seem impossible to cut your food bill. Here are 13 tips that will help stretch your food dollar while feeding your family healthy meals.

1) Plan your meals around the sales. Stores routinely rotate sales items every 6 weeks so plan accordingly and stock up. Are the big packs of chicken breast on sale this week? Instead of buying one pack purchase several packs, separate into family size portions and freeze. If you were to purchase extra of the items that are on sale each week you will have a well stocked freezer and pantry in no time.

Try to avoid buying anything in a box. Most boxed foods are full of preservatives and trans fats so it is best to avoid them. Do you like the convenience of boxed foods? There are several good cookbooks and recipes online for making homemade mixes to keep on hand. Everything from homemade cookie mix to macaroni and cheese and more. Put these mixes in a pretty jar with the directions to prepare and it also makes a nice frugal gift!

3) Use coupons wisely. How many times have you found yourself spending more than you planned after using coupons? The key to saving with coupons is to only purchase the items you would normally use anyway. You will also find that the store brand may still be the better bargain. An even better idea is to hold onto that coupon and wait for the item you want to go on sale.

4) Do a coupon exchange. Check with family and friends who get the Sunday paper and exchange coupons for ones you can use. This is a good strategy for stocking up when you use coupons for items on sale.

5) Buy produce in season. It will taste much better and you will usually pay less. Also in the warmer months be sure to take advantage of farmers markets for low prices on produce. Buy items like peppers and onions when on sale, chop them and freeze them for quick recipes during the week. Zucchini freezes well once it is shredded. You can use it for anything from bread to mock crab cakes.

6) Make your grocery list and stick to it. Beware of those impulse buys! The only exception is when the store might be having an unadvertised sale on products that you currently use.

7) Shop after dinner. you wont be tempted to pick up fast food because you are too tired and hungry to cook dinner. If it isn’t possible to shop after dinner then be sure to have a snack before you go to curb your appetite.

8) Shop alone. Nothing blows a budget quicker than when your kids are with you! You will also get out of the store much quicker which will actually save you money.

Think of creative ways you can use meat and poultry for more than one meal. Meat sauce is just as satisfying with half the amount of ground beef. Slice cheaper cuts of meats thin and use for stir fries. Leftover chicken and beef is also great on top of a salad.

10) Don’t be loyal to just one store. Most grocery stores have certain items priced really low to get your business. If you have several grocery stores in your area try and take advantage of what deals each store has to offer. Of course with the high price of gas it helps to plan these trips when you are in the area, such as stopping at stores that are on your way home from work.

11) Have breakfast for dinner once in a while. French toast with fruit and milk is quick and economical and the kids will love it for dinner.

12) Think leftovers! When planning your meals think ahead of creative ways you could use the leftovers. Did you roast a whole chicken? Shred the leftovers for a quick chicken casserole the next day.

13) Invest in a freezer. To really stock up on sale items then you will find that purchasing a freezer will pay for itself in no time. Watch for sales in your local paper. We found the best deal at our local warehouse club.

These are just a few simple tips to help you stretch your budget. Even if you use just a few of these tips you will find them useful for saving money!

My 7 Tips for Saving the most amount of money on your meat purchases: 1. Store Flyers: The sales flyer for your store will always have the best deal on meat (typically 50% off or more) on the front page of their flyer. Remember, a buy one, get one free sale is 50% off. Also, keep an eye out on the weekend, as the major supermarkets tend to release a 3 or 4-day sales flyer over the weekend that may have even better deals on meat. 2. Coupons in the Mail: Don’t throw away your “junk” mail before flipping through it. If there is a local meat market in your town/area, they may have released special coupons on meat like the one I show you in my video. These are like gold! 3. Clearance!!! All major supermarkets have a clearance section somewhere in their meat department. Your butcher can let you know where this area is and when the meat is marked down so you can get first dibs at the discounted meat. Also, watch the sell by date on the fresh meat. If you notice one with a date that is really close and it’s not marked down, take it to the butcher and POLITELY ask if they can drop the price at all. Most of the time, they will happily oblige. Meat purchased close to the sell-by date is safe as long as you use it or freeze it within 24 hours of purchasing. 4. Value Packs: Sometimes called family packs, these large portions of meat can get you BIG savings when you wait for them to go on sale. The meat should work out to less than /lb – if not, it’s not a very good sale. Buy these

Grocery Coupons – When are They Not a Good Deal?

By: Steve Carroll
Posted: Aug 19, 2009

]]>

Last Sunday I was scanning the weekly ads hunting for grocery coupons that I could use on our family’s weekly grocery shopping trip when a thought crossed my mind.  When is couponing not a good deal? Could unsuspecting frugal shoppers get carried away with the current “Coupon Craze” and end up spending more money than they actually need to?

It seems like everyone these days are clipping grocery coupons and searching out printable coupons on the internet which can save you substantial money on your grocery bill each month.  But I believe that clipping coupons isn’t the only answer and, in a worst case scenario, could cause you to spend more money than you need to.

How many of you have actually stopped to consider the prices you are paying at your local grocery store?  Are you loyal to a specific supermarket?  Do you look down at stores like Wal-Mart or discount grocery stores with some contemptuous smirk?   (Don’t laugh… I read a forum post from one coupon mom that refused to step a foot inside a Wal-Mart store due to her political morality!)  The message I am trying to get across is that it pays to shop around.

Kimberly, on her Addicted to Costco blog, recently did a great price comparison between three stores.  HEB, Wal-Mart and Randall’s (which is the same as Safeway).  She picked 39 frequently purchased items and stuck to leading brands.  Not surprising, the prices from each store differed extremely depending on the product with Costco having the best prices on 30 out of the 39 items and Randall’s (Safeway) being the most expensive.

While I was surprised at the difference my wife wasn’t at all.  She says Safeway has always been the most expensive chain grocery store in our area and that only when you start using the Safeway rewards card coupled with manufacturer coupons do their prices start to come down to prices more in line with less expensive grocery stores.

So, what’s my advice?  Don’t be loyal to just one grocery store.  Do what Kimberly did and do a price comparison of the grocery stores in your neighborhood.  Once you are armed with this data you will be better equipped to save money with or without coupons!  You might find that the non-sale prices at your discount grocer are better than the sale prices with coupons at the chain grocery stores.  Use your manufacturer coupons at your less expensive grocery stores instead of the more expensive grocers like Safeway.  Also, ask the manager of your discount grocery store if they accept competitor’s coupons.   It never hurts to ask!
